The dropping pins experiment

Today in chemistry we attached pins to a metal rod using Vaseline. We then put the rod above a Bunsen burner and timed how long it took for the Vaseline to melt and the pins to drop.

The times of our pins dropping were: 12 seconds, 17 seconds, 31 seconds, 51 seconds, 1 minute 15 seconds.

The reason the pins dropped is because the travelling heat made the Vaseline want to move with the vibrations and then the pins dropped because the Vaseline wasn't there anymore.
