Final Sport Science Blog

What tests did we do? To test our power we did a standing vertical jump, to test muscular endurance we did a plank, for speed we did a timed 30 metre sprint, for flexability we tried to touch our toes, for agility we did a agility course, for strength we saw how long we could hang from a bar, for coordination we threw a ball at a wall with one hand and caught it with the other for seconds, for balance we saw how long we could stand on our toes on one foot, for cardiovascular endurance we did the beep test, and for reaction time we had someone else drop a ruler and we then saw how fast we could catch it.

What were you trying to improve? The things I was trying to improve the most were power and coordination.

How did you improve those skills? To improve these I did squats for power, and catching with a partner for coordination.

Did you improve on any skills? I did improve on strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, coordination, reaction time, speed, power, and balance.

Why do you think you improved on those skills? I think that I improved on those skills beacuse I practiced them all during the practices so I could improve.

Which skills do you want to spend more time improving on and how are you going to improve? I would like to improve more on my power and I will do this by doing squats everyday to try and improve.

Market Day

What did market day get you to do? Market day got me to budget for our group, write a letter applying for finance, and make decisions on what could earn me more profit.

What were your learnings? I learnt how to budget easily, make a bigger profit, and apply for finance.

How important were decisions that you made? Some of the decisions that we made were very important, like changing what to package our product in, making us able to sell more product and earn a bigger profit.

Do you believe your group was successful? I believe that my group was very successful in market day, because we sold out and made a good profit.

Do you believe you held up the values of HHS? I believe that I did hold up the value of HHS during market day, because when at my stall I was kind and respectful to everyone, andthen while looking at other stalls I was respectful to the people selling their products.

Balance

What is the human balance system? The human balance system is a combination of your brain, muscles, and a small system in your inner ear.

What are some techniques you can do to improve your balance? You can stand on one leg and close your eyes, look side to side fast for 30 seconds, you can try to balance with your eyes closed.

Why do some people feel dizzy after spinning around? Because there is a small amount of liquid in each ear that tells your brain about balance, and they still spin after you finish spinning.

Lawyer paragraph about romans

The romans changed the way we constructed buildings by inventing concrete.

The romans have made life easier for us by inventing concrete, because it makes it easier to keep buildings together, while making it stribger. The way they moved concrete also made it easier to get concrete around.

Evidence of this is the strength of buildings that have concrete, compared to the buildings that don't have concrete insisde of them. Concrete is really strong and strengthens buildings that use it. Concrete also makes it faster to keep parts together rather than using other stuff such as dry mud.

The romans have made life now much easier by inventing concrete.

The gladiator games advertisement

Recently in social studies we have been learning about ancient rome and what they have done for the future/invented. The romans invented many things like aquaducts and concrete but the biggest thing they are known for is the gladiator games. We had to then make an advertisement for the gladiator games and here is my work.

Gymnastics in PE

For the oast 4 weeks we have been doing gymnastics in PE. We have been using 6 apparatus - bar, beam, parralel bars, mini tramp, floor/mat and trampoline.

One challenge for me was the lower arm walk on the parralel bars because it was harder than I expected.

One achievement for me was being able to land a flip on the mini tramp.

The New Zealand land march dlo

Here is the google slide I have done for my dlo of the New Zealand land march.

The work we had to do was make a dlo about the New Zealand land march.
The main dlo's were; What was the New Zealand land march? Understand the events that caused the protests. Understand how the events helped change NZ's future.
I worked well when working with Tj, Evan and Divontae because I didn't get distracted.
I think that it was most challenging trying to find some facts that weren't already provided.
Next time I would try to present my dlo a bit more neat.

The New Zealand Land March

Recently in social studies we have been learning about the New Zealand land march and where it started and ended.

The work was quite easy because we just had to search the name of the town and add it to our project.

Pe

For the past week, we have been playing badminton in P.E. Today I am going to tell you how to score a game of badminton You can play badminton in singles or pairs. There are smaller lines for a single match and wider/deeper lines for a doubles match. if you hit the shuttlecock over to the opposite side, and they don't hit, but it lands within the court lines, you score a point. If a server is unsuccessful in hitting the shuttlecock over the net, or the serve doesn't go diagonal, it's a point to the other team and they get the next serve. if you hit the shuttlecock out of the lines/court, it's a point to the other team.

The Springbok Tour

The Springbok Tour

1. What is another word for apartheid? Separated
2. Why did the protesters wear helmets? The police used long batons and would smash people over the head with it if they didn't have a helmet
3. Why do you think being called "honorary whites" upset the Maori all blacks? Because they couldn't be their own colour they had to be white
4. Why was the Hamilton rugby game cancelled? It was cancelled because hundreds of anti tour protesters occupied the field
5. Do you think the protest was successful and why? Yes, because they stopped all of the racist things and Nelson Mandela became President of South Africa
6. How do you think the NZ protests helped Nelson Mandela? I think they helped Nelson Mandela because it helped end racism and made everyone equal.

Facts
1.  The tour lasted 56 days

Recently in social studies we have been learning about the human rights. I worked with Divontae to make a poster. Here is the finished poster

Gloriavale

 1. What are the traditional roles of men, women and children in the community? The men are more expected to do jobs like building, women are expected to clean and look after children, children are expected to do small jobs like cleaning.

2. At what age are members of Gloriavale expected to begin working? Children are expected to start working as soon as they can walk.

3. What role does religion play in the lives of Gloriavale members? Religion is the biggest thing in their lives in Gloriavale.

4. Do you think people living in Gloriavale are happy? Why or why not? I think they are happy because their life is the only one they know so they think that it is good.

5. Do you think the people in Gloriavale expeirience Human Rights? Most human rights probably but they don't experience all because they have to work from such a young age.

6. Would you be happy to live in a community like Gloriavale. Why or why not? Probably not because that is a big change from my current life and I don't think I would like it better.

Wananga numeracy

This week for wananga we were learning numeracy.

We first practised by using a website named prototec where we had to time how fast we could do certain math questions.

The Walt was 'Use long multiplication to work out 2-3 digit multiplication'

We then practised using long multiplication and that is all of the work we have done this week.

Chemistry Blog on the effects of heat

Contraction: We learnt during chemistry that contraction is when hot air stuck in one little area hits cold air and rushes out diffusing and taking all air out of the small area that then gets sucked up into a smaller size. We did this by putting boiling water into a can and then tipping the can into an ice cream container full of cold water which then made the can implode.

Expansion: Expansion is where something gets bigger, like when you heat up certain metals they get bigger and can't fit in the same places anymore. We did this with a metal ball and a metal hoop, we heated up the ball so that it no longer fit through the hoop but when we cooled down the ball it was able to fit through the hoop.

Conduction: Conduction is where you get heat to slowly travel up something and the heat starts to make the solid it is travelling up vibrate and other things attached will fall off. We did this with a metal rod that we attached five pins with using Vaseline, we then turned on a Bunsen burner underneath the rod and watched the pins drop from the closest to the heat first to the furthest from the heat last.

Convection in liquid: Convection is when a solid gets dissolved by hot water and it starts to diffuse out and all around the whole area. We did this with crystals that dissolved in water and then started to spread across the water until it was all the colour of the crystal.

Convection in solids and gasses: Convection is when a solid gets burnt so that it is less dense and it rises up because it is light enough. We did this with a piece of paper on tea leaves, we then lit the top of the paper and as it got lighter it started to lift off the tea leaves and into the air.

ICT Semester 1 summary

ICT semester 1 summary

In ICT, I will be reviewing with you what I have been learning in ICT during terms 1 and 2.

Term 1

During weeks 2 and 3, we have been learning about cyber safety, and the things we did were make a kahoot, complete a typing.com course, and play a game called interland.

In week 4, we began using a tool called 'Microsoft Word' which is like docs and one of the features we used in word was 'copy and paste' 'spellcheck' 'heading' and 'search and replace'.

During weeks 5-6, we have been learning how to manage files and move between files and folders. We also learnt how to replace words with symbols.

In weeks 7 to 11, we used a new feature in word called 'drawing' which is similar to google drawing, and we used this feature to recreate posters and make basic designs.

Term 2

In weeks 1 to 3, we learnt how to create and use tables, diagrams, text boxes, and columns in word.

In weeks 4 and 5 we used a new tool named 'publisher'. It is similar to google slides and we used it to make greeting cards and calendars.

In weeks 6-8, we learnt a new tool called 'excel'. It is similar to google sheets and one of the main features we used was 'auto sum', which allowed us to add the sum of numbers in multiple cells. we also made charts using excel and the data we had put in.

Here are some examples of the work I have done:

My review of the tools I used during this class: I quite liked using word as it was similar to google docs which I use quite often. I didn't really like publisher as I will never make a greeting card or calendar. I also enjoyed excel because it was interesting using the different codes to make answers.

The dropping pins experiment

Today in chemistry we attached pins to a metal rod using Vaseline. We then put the rod above a Bunsen burner and timed how long it took for the Vaseline to melt and the pins to drop.

The times of our pins dropping were: 12 seconds, 17 seconds, 31 seconds, 51 seconds, 1 minute 15 seconds.

The reason the pins dropped is because the travelling heat made the Vaseline want to move with the vibrations and then the pins dropped because the Vaseline wasn't there anymore.

English independent work number 2

1.
Lurking in the darkness, the cat waited for its prey.
Insisting to come with, the younger sibling finally got what they wanted.
Grasping for air, he finally reached the surface and gulped in air.
Surpassing his sibling, he was now the most highly achieved sibling.
2.
Why he did it, I don't know.
When pigs fly, then I will answer you.
What was wrong, everyone wanted to know.
Whilst they played games, their parents were on their phones.
3.

Emerging from the depth, the monster sought its new prey.

When the baking was complete, the ovens were cleaned thoroughly.

Committed to improving their routine, the dancers trained daily.

Overpowered by the wave, the swimmers were swept off their feet.

Analysing the situation, the commander decided the hill route was best.

While we were watching the experiment, the paper ignited.

Hoping to improve his score, Matthew studied his times tables daily.

With their friends and family watching, the students took to the stage.

Undaunted by the work, the builders pushed on to repair the house.

English Independent work number 1

1.

Suddenly, he burst from around the corner.

Cautiously, he tip toed around the corner.

Silently, he sneaked out of the house.

Enthusiastically, the students burst outside to play a game.

2.

Through the dark night, I saw movement.

Among the people, there was an alien.

Against the wall, you could hear people talking next door.

Far from home, children were playing on a playground.

3.

Silently, the cat stalked its prey.

In 1975, a high school was finally built in Hornby.

Amongst the papers, I found my homework.

Anxiously, I awaited my test results.

Fortunately, the kai today was something good.

About twenty years ago, a law was passed that changed everything.

Often, the things we say and the things we mean are two different things.

Cautiously, he knocked on the principals door and awaited a reply.

Write that essay sentences 3

The 'ed' sentence

Try starting your sentence with the -ed form of the verb. It makes for a punchy start to the sentence.

Remember the rule: when you have finished your -ed phrase, place a comma, then write the rest of the sentence.

Some words to use: surprised, excited, angered, possessed, committed, electrified, undaunted, overpowered, concerned, horrified, cornered, delighted, enthralled, murdered

Examples: Determined to win, Tony pushed himself in the last metres if the race. Concerned for the well being of others, the prime minister passed new laws. Horrified by the gore, I turned away from the screen.

My own sentences: Concerned from the past, he was always aware of his surroundings. Committed to the work, he finished his classes with time to spare. Amazed at his skills, the judges were in awe. Pleased by the noise level, the teacher gave everyone a reward.

The 'power' sentence

If you waffle a lot in your writing, try using a power sentence. Begin your paragraph with a power sentence of 12 words or less. Get straight to the point.

Examples: Money is the root of all evil. What is right, isn't always popular.

My own examples: Not everyone is smart. Not everyone is strong. Nobody is the same as you.

Write that essay sentences 2

The 'w' sentence.

Try starting your sentence with a 'w' word. These sentences make your work sound thoughtful and knowledgeable.

Remember the rule: not every 'w' word marks as a sentence starter. Remember where to put a comma in when the parts of the sentence affected by your 'w' are finished.

Some 'w' words you can use: who, while, whilst, whereas, when, where, what, with, who, whom

Examples: Whilst the teacher was talking, the students were pretending to listen. With a majority of the votes, Hitler seized power. When the bell rings, we run to leave class.

My own examples: Whilst I walked home, I remembered I had homework. Why he did it, I don't know. When mum yelled, he hid from her. Whilst I worked, other students were talking. Whilst they waited for the bus, they talked about their classes. When the earthquake hit, the children screamed. While some kids ran, others walked.

The 'ing' sentence

Try starting the sentence the -ing form of the verb.

Remember the rule: when you have finished your -ing phase, place a comma, then write the rest of the sentence.

Some words you can use: listening, watching, running, reciting, realising, emerging, grasping, speaking, analysing, signalling, exposing.

Examples: Realising the danger, people fled from the city. Shaking away the nerves, he approached the  microphone. Emerging from the water, the swimmer was greeted with cheers.

My own examples: Realising he had messed up, he made amens. Emerging from nowhere, the monster attacked. Grasping for air, he finally made it above the surface. Watching them calmly, he took notes.

Write that essay: sentences

 Meanings of words

Adverb - describes a verb - quickly.

Verb - doing word - running.

Preposition - a word that gives location or movement - in, under, on.

The adverb sentence

Start the sentence with an adverb, it adds interest and intrigue.

Remember the rule: when you start the sentence with an adverb you need to put a comma after the adverb and then finish the sentence.

Some adverbs - slowly, interestingly, suddenly, often, surprisingly, simply, excitedly, unfortunately, fortunately, confusingly, concerningly, remarkably, significantly, firstly.

Example - Surprisingly, Mrs Handley was on time to class.

Unfortunately, she had forgotten her keys.

My own examples:

Slowly, the turtle crossed the road.

Suddenly, the cat jumped around the corner.

Remarkably, he kept on running.

Often, he would buy himself lunch.

Questionably, someone was playing music in the corner.

The preposition sentence - In 2013, Hornby High accepted year 7/8 students.

Remember the rule: When you start the sentence with a preposition, you have to put a comma after the movement or position ends.

Example - Throughout my time at school, I have learnt many things.

Prepositions: In, throughout, under, above, between, below, on, around, near, against, within

My own examples

After school, he went home.

On Wednesday, he went out with mates.

Outside the window, a cat hid under a car.

Near my house, there is a cafe.

Below the roof, is a happy family.

Essay brainstorm

 P.E improves your lung function

Regular sport causes more oxygen to be drawn into the body with carbon monoxide and waste gases expelled. This increases the lung capacity during sport, improving lung function and efficiency.

its makes you have a stronger heart.

Your heart is a muscle and needs frequent exercise to help it keep fit and healthy. A healthy heart can pump blood efficiently around your body. Your heart will improve in performance when it is regularly challenged with exercise. Stronger hearts can improve overall health of the body.

P.E develops a better relationship

Sports enables you to build better relationships with people you may be aware of, but not know personally. Through frequent sport you can get to know a lot about an individual’s personality, their strengths and weaknesses. Sport with colleagues is a good opportunity to build better relationships and networks that may help you in your job.

Jacinda Ardern

Do you know who the 40th Prime Minister of New Zealand is?

Well it is Jacinda Ardern.

Today I am going to tell you about Jacinda Ardern.

Jacinda Ardern is the current Prime minister of New Zealand and has been since August 2017.

Jacinda Ardern became the youngest female head of government after being elected at age 37.

Jacinda Ardern was born on the 26th of July 1980 in Hamilton. Later in her life Jacinda then got a bachelor of communication studies. Jacinda then joined the Labour party in 2007 and became a senior figure in the Young Labour section of the party. In 2008 Jacinda was then elected into the house of representatives as a list mp. Finally Jacinda was elected as the prime minister of New Zealand in August 2017.

Moving cups challenge

 Cup challenge:

During health we got put into groups and we were given 5 cups, a rubber band and string. We were then told to find a way to move the cups from one table to another, one by one using the string and rubber band while the whole team had to be holding a part of the string.

What IP skill did you use or show?

I used active listening and listened to my teammates when they gave their ideas.

How did it help with the success or lack of success of the activity?

It helped with the success because we all then knew what to do and could do it better.

Who did you work with that worked well today?

Jaren and Hrishaal.

If you were to do it again what would you do differently?

We would probably get the building done faster so we had more time to practice moving the cups.

Dirty Water

Aim - To make water dirty and then clean it again Method - Use a 250ml beaker to get 200ml of water. Add 2 spoonfuls of dirt. Add 10ml of oil. Add a spoonful of pebbles. Stir it in for 2mins. Label a piece of paper with your names and place it under your beaker. Take a photo of your experiment.

Aim - To dilute our dirty water Method - Stir your dirty water for 1 minute. Using a measuring cylinder, measure 100ml of your dirty water into another beaker. Add 100ml of water to your dirty water. Stir for 2 minutes. Discard the original 100ml of dirty water. Repeat again. Take a photo of your experiment.
Discussion - To start with making the water dirty we got some dirt, pebbles, and bark as solutes and then we added it to the water that acted as our solvent. Then to dilute the solution we slowly started to move the water into a clean spot and then put it back in the original place after cleaning it. We then filtered the diluted solution through filtering cloth and filtering paper to clean the water. We ended with water that was pretty clean but not clean enough to drink yet.

Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was the first president of South Africa and probably the most famous one since. He also fought for equality in South Africa and was arrested for his protests later in life. After being released from prison he eventually did help topple South Africa's rascial problems. Nelson Mandela was probably one of the biggest black rights activists and had a big influence in changing the segregation in South Africa.

Athletics Blog

Athletics blog

Athletics events that I have learnt this term are shot put, discus, 100m sprint, long jump, high jump, relay.

List one technique helpful for each event: for discus you keep a flat line in your throw, for sprints lean forward slightly, for high jump jump off of your closest foot, for shot put don't throw it push it, in long jump fall forward not backwards.

List your results for these events in PE or on athletics day: in high jump I got 1 metre, shot put I got 5 metres, discus I got 16.80 metres.

Did you bring your PE gear each session? Yes

Did you participate each week? Yes
